Natural Cleaning Products You Can Make At Home
Cleaning products are readily available in literally all convenient stores in your area, but you don’t have to always rely on those commercial products. Many things in your kitchen are effective cleaning solutions; they are cheap, more natural, and therefore healthier than their chemically processed counterparts. Some common homemade cleaners are as follows.
- Salt: it has abrasive properties and absorbent as well, making it a natural cleaning product.
- Baking soda: scientifically called sodium bicarbonate, this is an alkaline solution produced naturally in mineral springs. Similar to salt, baking soda is abrasive. It also has foaming action to help with gentle cleaning.
- Lemon juice: the most useful ingredient that makes it an effective cleaning solution is the ascorbic acid. Lemon juice is a favorite because it does most cleaning jobs very well and the fact that it smells better than other products.
- White vinegar: the acetic acid in white vinegar carries great cleaning properties. It is even possible to increase the acidity level by mixing it with boiled water. Compared to lemon juice, white vinegar is cheaper, but it smells worse.
Although those homemade cleaning solutions are made from natural products, they still contain certain amounts of acids which can burn eyes and sting your skin. It is advisable to wear safety gear such as goggles and rubber gloves, and make sure you have good air flow in the room with sufficient ventilation. Mixing different products can also create more powerful cleaning solution. Here are some of the most commonly used recipes to clean stubborn dirt.
Glass Cleaner
You can use the following recipe to clean windows, over door, glass cooktops, and even shelving in refrigerator. The required ingredients are:
- hot water
- ½ cup of rubbing alcohol
- ¼ teaspoon of dishwashing liquid
- 2 tablespoons of ammonia
Mix all the ingredients and add enough hot water to make a quart of cleaning solution. If you don’t like the smell of ammonia, you can replace it with lemon juice or white vinegar. This substitution will make the solution less powerful, but smell better. This is a gentle cleaner, but you may add a teaspoon of cornstarch to the formula to create a super homemade window cleaning solution.
Mildew remover
This mildew remover formula works on any washable or painted surface. You need the following ingredients:
- 3 quarts of hot or warm water
- 1/3 cup of laundry detergent (powdered)
- 1 quart of liquid chlorine bleach
Mix all those ingredients in a spray bottle. Apply them to the mildew-infested surface, and let it sit for several minutes. Before the liquid is dry, rinse the surface with hot water and wipe it with dry towel. Direct contact with the formula can burn the skin, so use the proper safety gear.
